2020 NFL Draft: Lions select CB Jeff Okudah from Ohio State

“With the third pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Jeff Okudah, cornerback from Ohio State.” Those words came from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as he announced each draft pick of the first round in his own basement on Thursday.

Coming into the draft, the Lions were in desperate need of a cornerback. A month ago, Detroit traded Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a third (No. 85 overall) and a fifth-round pick (No. 166). Not only that, Rashaan Melvin also signed a one-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars worth $2.25 million. Even though the Lions lost two cornerbacks from last season, they signed former Atlanta Falcon Desmond Trufant and have now drafted one of the best cornerbacks in all of college football last season.

Okudah started one-year (last season) for the Buckeyes and he played every game like it was his last game. He never allowed more than 50 yards to wide receivers per contest. According to Pro Football Focus, he never allowed over 12 yards to a receiver where he was in press coverage.
