Alpena City Firefighters Excited to Give Back at their annual Open Skate Event

Lieutenant Andy Marceau talks about the Open Skate event, and the fire department's excitement to give back to the community.

Alpena– The Alpena City Fire Department is keeping the holiday cheer going with its annual Open Skate event. Firefighters will be hitting the ice the day after Christmas to show its appreciation for the community’s unwavering support.

“It’s a way for us to give back to the community because the community is so generous to us. If we need something for the fire department or we have a fire in town people are always willing to help us, so we’re trying to give back to them.”

Open Skate has been a tradition of the fire department for more than ten years. Lieutenant Andy Marceau says the event is the perfect time to build connections and listen to the concerns of community members.

“Sometimes we see people at their lowest times because somebody’s been sick or injured or there’s been a house fire. There’s a time where they can come and talk to us, maybe ask us some questions or just know that we’re just normal people.

On duty staff will be at Northern Lights Arena helping little one’s tie their skates and ushering them onto the ice. The event will be from 1 to 3 PM.
